Qudrah (Power and Ability) of Allaah has no bounds. Allaah (Ta’ala) says:
“Allaah is not such that anything in the heavens or in the earth escapes Him. Verily, He is AllKnowing, AllOmnipotent.” [Surat Faatir (35:44)]
Allaah’s Messenger (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) liked that a Muslim constantly pondered on the Creation of Allaah because this increases his Eeman (faith). Allaah’s Messenger (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) has various Sunnahs in this regard. From amongst them is that he (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would glorify Allaah if he saw something strange. It was a way of declaring that only Allaah is Capable of this strange thing.
The Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would glorify Allaah when he saw a strange, unexpected act from the Mu’mineen (the believers). It was as if he glorified Allaah, Who created a variety of perspectives. There are ample examples of this in the Sunnah:
- Abu Hurairah (Radia-Allaahu ‘anhu) reported: “The Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) came across me on one of the streets of Madinah and at that time I was Junub (in a state of impurity from intercourse). So I slipped away from him and went to take a bath. On my return, the Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: ‘O Abu Hurairah! Where have you been?’ I replied: ‘I was Junub, so I disliked to sit in your company.’ The Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: ‘Subhaan Allaah (Glory be to Allaah)! A believer never becomes impure’.” [Saheeh Al-Bukhaari (283)]
- Anas (Radia-Allaahu ‘anhu) reported that Allaah’s Messenger (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) visited a person from amongst the Muslims to inquire (about his health), for he had grown feeble like a chicken. (Upon seeing him,) Allaah’s Messenger (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: Did you supplicate for anything or beg of Him about that? He said: Yes. I used to utter: ‘O Allaah! Impose punishment upon me earlier in this world, what You have to impose upon me in the Hereafter.’ Thereupon, Allaah’s Messenger (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: ‘Subhaan Allaah, you have neither the power nor forbearance to take upon yourself (the burden of His Punishment).’ Why did you not say:
اللهم آتنا في الدنيا حسنةً وفي الآخرة حسنةً وقِنا عذاب النار
O Allaah, grant us good in the world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the torment of the Fire.
The Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) supplicated for him, and he recovered. [Muslim (2688a)]
The Sahabah knew this Sunnah, and they too would glorify Allaah when they saw something strange.
Abu Hurairah (Radia-Allaahu ‘anhu) narrated that once Allaah’s Messenger (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) offered the morning prayer and then faced the people and said: “While a man was droving (herding) a cow, he suddenly rode it and beat it. The cow said: ‘We have not been created for this, but we have been created for plowing.’ Upon this, the people said astonishingly: ‘Subhaan Allaah (Glorified be Allaah)! A cow speaks!’ The Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: ‘I believe this, and Abu Bakr and ‘Umar too’ although neither of the two was present there.’ [The Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) continued]: ‘While a person was amongst his sheep, a wolf attacked and took one of the sheep. The man chased the wolf till he saved it from the wolf, whereupon the wolf said: ‘You have saved it from me; but who will guard it on the day of the wild beasts when there will be no shepherd to guard them except me (because of riots and afflictions)?’ The people said surprisingly, ‘Subhaan Allaah! A wolf speaks!’ The Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: ‘I believe this, and Abu Bakr and ‘Umar too’ although neither of them was present there.” [Saheeh Al-Bukhaari (3471)]
So let this be our practice as well i.e., to utter the glorification of Allaah when we see something strange. Moreover, we are rewarded with good for every Tasbeeh (glorification of Allaah) – and do not forget the saying of Allaah: “If you obey him, you shall be on the right guidance.” [Surat An-Nur (24:54)]
