This article explores the Prophet Muhammad’s (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) guidance on Wudu’ – Takhleel (passing water between fingers), Al-Madmadah and Istinshaaq (thorough mouth and nose rinsing), Mas-ha (wiping the head), ear care, and even washing footwear during ablution. You will learn the proper methods, the wisdom behind each step, and practical tips to perform Wudu’ (Purification) like the Messenger of Allaah (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).
- Takhleel (passing water) between the Fingers during Wudu’:
Laqeet ibn Saburah (Radia-Allaahu ‘anhu) said: The Messenger of Allaah (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Perform Wudu’ well, and make Takhleel (let the water pass) between the fingers.” [Reported by Abu Dawoud no. 142, At-Tirmidhi no. 788, An-Nasaa’i no. 114, and Ibn Maajah no. 448)]Description of Takhleel (passing water between fingers):
Begin with Takhleel of the right hand, starting from the little finger, and moving towards the thumb of the right hand, and for the left hand, start from the thumb and move towards the little finger; because the Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) loved to start on the right side during his Wudu’, and (following this manner) reflects starting on the right side. Takhleel includes both the fingers of the hands and the toes of the feet. [See: Al-Mughni by Ibn Qudamah (1/152)] - Extensively rinsing the Mouth, and sniffing water into the Nose (Istinshaaq):
Laqit ibn Saburah (Radia-Allaahu ‘anhu) said: “O Messenger of Allaah! Inform me about Wudu’.” He (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied: “Perform Wudu’ well and make Takhleel between the fingers and extensively perform Istinshaaq (sniff water freely/deeply into the nose) except when fasting.” [Reported by Abu Dawoud, no. 142), At-Tirmidhi, no. 788, An-Nasaa’i, no. 87, Ibn Maajah, no. 407, and An-Nawawi authenticated it in his Sharh of Muslim (3/105)] In the narration of Al-Daulabi, it is mentioned, “…and extensively rinse the mouth (Madmadah), and sniff water into the nose (Istinshaaq).” [Al-Zayla’i said: “It was narrated by Abul-Bishr Al-Daulabi in one of the parts of his collection of Ahadeeth from Sufyan Al-Thawri, where he mentioned Al-Madmadah and Al-Istinshaaq. Ibn Al-Qattan also mentioned it in his book, Al-Wahm wal-Eeham with the mentioned chain of narration and then he said: ‘This is a Saheeh Sanad.’] ‘Al-Madmadah’ is to place/enter water into the front part of the mouth, and ‘doing it extensively’ means ‘swishing the water in the entire mouth’.
‘Al-Istinshaaq’ is to put/enter water into the front part of the nose, and ‘doing it extensively’ means ‘making the water reach the uppermost part of the nose (nasal cavity)’.” [See: Al-Haawi Al-Kabir (1/106). Al-Kafi fi Fiqh Al-Imam Ahmad (1/60)] - Al-Madmadah and Al-Istinshaaq with a single handful of water
From ‘Abdullaah Ibn Zaid (Radia-Allaahu ‘anhu): “He poured water from a utensil onto his hands and washed them, and then he washed or did Al-Madmadah and Al-Istinshaaq with one handful of water, repeating this thrice. Then he said: “This is the ablution of Allaah’s Messenger (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).” [Reported by Al-Bukhaari, no. 191 and Muslim, no. 235] Al-Bukhaari mentioned this (narration) under the chapter: Al-Madmadah and Al-Istinshaaq with a single handful (of water). [Saheeh Al-Bukhaari 1/81] - Al-Madmadah and Al-Istinshaaq with the right hand, and blowing out with the left
‘Ali (Radia-Allaahu ‘anhu) called for water for ablution. Then he dipped his right hand, filled his mouth, performed Al-Madmadah and Al-Istinshaaq, and blew (the water) out with his left hand. He did this three times and then said: “This is the purification of the Prophet of Allaah (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).” [Reported by An-Nasaa’i, no. 91, and Ahmad in his Musnad, no. 1133. Authenticated by Al-Arna’oot in Al-Musnad 2/351] Ash-Shawkani (Rahimahullaah) said: “The Sunnah is to sniff water with the right hand and blow it out with the left.” [Nayl Al-Awṭaar 1/182] - Mas-ha (wiping) the hair during Wudu’; once, twice, or thrice
From ‘Abdullaah ibn Zaid (Radia-Allaahu ‘anhu): “He called for an earthenware pot containing water, and demonstrated Wudu’ for them – Wudu’ of the Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)…, then he put his hands (in the water), and then made Mas-ha (wiping) of his head; he brought both hands to the front and then to the back of the head once…” [Reported by Al-Bukhaari, no. 186 and Muslim, no. 235] In another narration, “And he made Mas-ha of his head twice.” [Reported by An-Nasaa’i, no. 99, and Al-‘Ayni authenticated it in Umdat Al-Qari (4/3)]From Shaqiq ibn Salamah, who said: “I saw ‘Uthmaan Ibn ‘Affaan wash his forearms three times, and make Mas-ha of his head thrice. He then said: I saw the Messenger of Allaah (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) do this.” [Reported by Abu Dawoud, no. 110 and authenticated by Al-Albaani] - Using Fresh/New Water for the Ears:
From ‘Abdullaah ibn Zaid (Radia-Allaahu ‘anhu): “He saw the Messenger of Allaah (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) making Wudu’, he took water for his ears other than the water he had taken for his head.” [Reported by Al-Bayhaqi in Al-Sunan Al-Kubra, no. 308. And he said: “This is a Saheeh Isnad.”] Some people of knowledge have emphasized this Sunnah and said: “Whoever wipes his ears with the water which was (already) used for wiping his head, it is as though he did not wipe them at all.” [See, An-Nawadir wal-Ziyadat ‘ala ma fi Al-Mudawwanah min Ghayriha min al-Ummahat (1/41)] - Washing the footwear whilst on the feet during Wudu’:
Ibn ‘Abbaas (Radia-Allaahu ‘anhuma) said: “‘Ali ibn Abi Talib entered upon me after he had spilled water. He then called for water for ablution. We brought him a vessel containing water and placed it before him. He said: ‘O Ibn ‘Abbaas, may I not show you how the Messenger of Allaah (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) used to perform ablution?’ I replied: ‘Yes.’ He then put both of his hands together (in the water) and took a handful of it and threw it on his foot which had footwear and did the same with the other foot. I asked him: ‘(Do you wash your foot) while it is in the shoe?’ He replied: ‘Yes, while it is in the shoe.’ I asked him: ‘(Do you wash your foot) while it is in the shoe?’ He replied: ‘Yes, while it is in the shoe.’ I asked him: ‘(Do you wash your foot) while it is in the shoe?’ He replied: ‘Yes, while it is in the shoe.'” [Reported by Abu Dawoud in his Sunan (1/43, no. 117)]
