Al-Ghaalib (The One Who has full Power and Control, The Predominant)

This Mighty Name is mentioned once in the Noble Qur’an. In Surat Yusuf (12:21), Allaah (Ta’ala) says:

 وَٱللَّهُ غَالِبٌ عَلَىٰٓ أَمۡرِهِۦ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَڪۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ

“…And Allaah has full power and control over His affairs, but most of men know not.”

The Name Al-Ghaalib is also mentioned in the form of a verb in another verse. In Surat al-Mujadilah (58:21), Allaah (Ta’ala) says:

ڪَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ لَأَغۡلِبَنَّ أَنَا۟ وَرُسُلِىٓ‌ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَوِىٌّ عَزِيزٌ۬

“Allaah has decreed: ‘Verily! It is I and My Messengers who shall be the victorious.’ Verily, Allaah is All-Powerful, All-Mighty.”

THE MEANING OF THE NAME:

Ibn Jarir (Rahimahullaah) said: “And Allaah has full power and control over his affairs” means that Allaah, the Exalted, is Predominant over the affairs of Yusuf (‘Alayhis-salaam), controlling, managing, and encompassing them. The pronoun ‘Haa’ in the word ‘Amrihi’ (his affairs) refers to Yusuf (‘Alayhis-salaam).” [Jami’ul Bayaan]

Al-Hulaimee (Rahimahullaah) said: “Al-Ghaalib is the One Who attains what He wants from His creation whether they like it or hate it. This indicates His Perfect Power and Wisdom. He is Irresistible, Whom none can deceive.” [Al-Minhaaj]

Al-Baghawi (Rahimahullaah) said: “And Allaah has full power and control over His Affairs”, the pronoun ‘Haa’ in the word ‘Amrihi’ (His affairs) refers to Allaah (Ta’ala). It means Allaah has full power over His affairs, He does What He Wills, nothing can overpower Him and none can repel His Decision.

And it is said that the pronoun “Haa” refers to Yusuf (‘Alayhis-salaam), and it denotes Allaah’s Control over the affairs of Yusuf (‘Alayhis-salaam) by managing them and encompassing them. He (Ta’ala) will not entrust him to anyone until He makes him reach what He wills for him to attain.” [Mu’alim at-Tanzeel]

Ibn Katheer (Rahimahullaah) said: “And Allaah has full power and control over His Affairs” means He does whatever He Wills. If He Wills something, then there is no averting His decision; it can never be stopped or contradicted. Rather, Allaah has full power over everything and everyone.” [Tafseer al-Qur’an al-‘Adheem]

Shaikh as-Sa’dee (Rahimahullaah) said: “And Allaah has full power and control over His Affairs” means His command is executive (predominant), and there is nothing or anyone able to stop or abolish it and none can overpower Him.” [Tayseer al-Kareem]

THE IMPACT OF BELIEF IN THIS MIGHTY NAME:

Allaah (Ta’ala) is the absolute Irresistible, the Predominant. None is able to repel what He ordains or prevent what He has written. There is no repeller against His preordainment, nor is there any adjuster of His Decision.

He (Ta’ala) says in Surat al-A’raaf (7:54):

 أَلَا لَهُ ٱلۡخَلۡقُ وَٱلۡأَمۡرُ‌ۗ تَبَارَكَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ

“…Surely, His is the Creation and Commandment. Blessed is Allaah, the Lord of the ‘Alameen (mankind, jinn and all that exists)!”

Al-Qurtubi (Rahimahullaah) said: “It is obligatory upon every Mukullaf (person meeting the conditions to be held legally accountable for his actions) to know that Allaah (Ta’ala( is the Absolute Ghaalib (Predominant). Therefore, whoever holds to Him will be triumphant (predominant), even if all those on the earth are pursuing him.

Allaah (Ta’ala) says in Surat al-Mujadilah (58:21):

 ڪَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ لَأَغۡلِبَنَّ أَنَا۟ وَرُسُلِىٓ‌ۚ

“Allaah has decreed: ‘Verily! It is I and My Messengers who shall be the victorious...’”

And whoever turns away from Allaah and holds onto other than Him will be overpowered and defeated. He will be trapped; (i.e. overthrown) in the Shaytaan’s trap.

Allaah (Ta’ala) says in Surat an-Nisaa’ (4:76)

 فَقَـٰتِلُوٓاْ أَوۡلِيَآءَ ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنِ‌ۖ إِنَّ كَيۡدَ ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنِ كَانَ ضَعِيفًا

‘… So fight you against the friends of Shaytaan (Satan); Ever feeble indeed is the plot of Shaytaan (Satan).’”[End quote- Al-Kitaab al-Asnaa]
