The Name of Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala), Al-’Aleem is mentioned in the Noble Qur’an in one hundred and fifty seven verses, such as:

Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said in Surat al-Baqarah (2:32):

“They (angels) said: ‘Glory be to You, we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Verily, it is You, the All-Knower, the All-Wise.’”

In Surat Aal-Imran (3:154), Allaah (‘Azza wa Jall) said:

“Allaah is All-Knower of what is in (your) breasts.”

In Surat al-Ma’idah (5:97), Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said:

“Allaah is the All-Knower of each and everything.”

In Surat ar-Rum (30:54), Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said:

“He creates what He wills. And it is He Who is the All-Knowing, the All-Powerful (i.e. Able to do all things).”

In Surat Ya-Seen (36:38), Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said:

“And the sun runs on its fixed course for a term (appointed). That is the Decree of the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing.”

Whereas the Name of Allaah, Al-’Aalim, is mentioned in the Noble Qur’an in thirteen verses such as:

Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said in Surat al-An’aam (6:73):

“His will be the dominion on the Day when the Trumpet will be blown. All-Knower of the unseen and the seen.”

In Surat at-Tawbah (9:94), Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said:

“In the end you will be brought back to the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen, then He (Allaah) will inform you of what you used to do.”

The Name of Allaah (‘Azza wa Jall), Al-’Allaam, is mentioned in the Noble Qur’an in four verses such as:

In Surat al-Ma’idah (5:109), Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said:

“They (the Messengers) will say: ‘We have no knowledge, verily, only You are the All-Knower of all that is hidden (or unseen etc.).’”

Also in Surat al-Ma’idah (5:116), Allaah (‘Azza wa Jall) said about Prophet ‘Isa (‘Alayhis-Salaam):

“You know what is in my inner self though I do not know what is in Yours. Truly, You, only You, are the All-Knower of all that is hidden and unseen.”

The meaning of  these Beautiful Names:

Ibn Jarir (Rahimahullaah) said: “O our Lord! You are the All-Knowing of all what was and what is going to be, and the All-Knower of all that is hidden of all Your creation.” He also added: “Indeed Allaah has the knowledge of all of what is concealed in the breasts of His creation of belief and disbelief, truth and falsehood, good and evil.” [At-Tabari 1/175]

Al-Khattabi (Rahimahullaah) said: “He is the All-Knowing of the secrets and the hidden matters which the knowledge of the creation cannot perceive, as He (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said in Surat Luqman (31:23):

“Verily, Allaah is the All-Knower of what is in the breasts (of men).”

The Name, Al-’Aleem, implies the complete and perfect knowledge of Allaah, therefore, Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said in Surat Yusuf (12:76):

“Over all those endowed with knowledge is the All-Knowing (Allaah).” [Sha’n ad-Du’aa]

Shaikh as-Sa’dee (Rahimahullaah) said: “He is the One Whose Knowledge encompasses all the apparent and hidden matters, the open and the secret, all those things that must necessarily occur, all those things that are impossible to occur and all things that can possibly occur, of the affairs of the whole creation, of the past, the present and the future. There is absolutely nothing that is hidden from Him.” [Tayseer al-Kareem 5/299]

The impact of believing in these Names:

1- Affirmation of the complete, perfect and comprehensive knowledge to Allaah Alone; no one among His creation resembles Him in His complete Knowledge.

Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) affirmed the comprehensive and perfect knowledge to Himself in many verses such as in Surat Ta-Ha (20:98):

“Your Lord is only Allaah, the One La Ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped except He). He has full knowledge of all things.”

In Surat Ghafir (40:7), Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said:

“You comprehend all things in Mercy and Knowledge.”

In Surat at-Talaq (65:12), Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said:

“And that Allaah surrounds (comprehends) all things in (His) Knowledge.”

These verses confirm Allaah’s Knowledge of everything, the small and the big, the minute and the great matters; as He (‘Azza wa Jall) said in Surat al-An’aam (6:59):

“And with Him are the keys of the unseen, none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darkness of the earth and no moist or dry (thing) but that it is (written) in a Clear Record.”

Some of the philosophers and their followers, like Ibn Sina for example, denied the knowledge of Allaah about the details or particulars of the matters. They claimed that He (Subhana wa Ta’ala) knows the things entirely in a general form, not absolutely. Sheikh- ul-Islam (Rahimahullaah) and his student Ibn al-Qayyim (Rahimahullaah) refuted their claims. Ibn al-Qayyim (Rahimahullaah) said in Madarij al-Salikeen:

“’Al-Hamdulillah’, (all praise is due to Allaah), includes the refutation of the claim of those who say that Allaah knows about the things generally and not in details:

  1. This word (Al-Hamdulillah) indicates (encompasses) Allaah’s complete praise. How come the One Who deserves all praise does not know anything of the world and its details, does not know the number of the stars and the planets, does not know who obeys Him and who does not?
  2. It is impossible to give our Ilaah and Lord such a defective description, because the worshipped Ilaah (God) should know the state of His worshipper!
  3. The affirmation of the full sovereignty and kingship to Allaah. How does a King not know about His wards or the state of His Kingdom?
  4. The affirmation of His Mercy. It is impossible to be merciful with whom He does not know.
  5. He is the One Who recompenses the people on the Day of Judgment.

Denying Allaah’s Knowledge about the details of His creation is void and contradicts all what is mentioned above.

How does the knowledge of Allaah, Who created everything, not comprehend everything?

“Should not He Who has created know? And He is the Most Kind and Courteous (to His slaves), All-Aware (of everything).” [Al-Mulk (67:14)]

2- Due to Allaah’s (Subhana wa Ta’ala) complete and perfect knowledge, He knows what was, what will be, and what will not be and how it will be, i.e. Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) knows the matters that happened in the past, the future matters which have not yet happened and He knows the matters which will not happen and if supposedly they will happen, He knows how they will happen; and this is out of His complete knowledge of the unseen and the consequences of the matters. This is the belief of Ahl-As-Sunnah wal-Jam’ah. The proofs for that are many, such as:

Allaah’s Statement in Surat al-Qamar (54:49):

“Verily, We have created all things with ‘Qadar’ (Divine Pre-ordainment of all things before their creation, as written in the Book of Decree).”

Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said in Surat Saad (38:85) to Iblis:

“That I will fill Hell with you (Iblis) and those of them (mankind) that follow you, together.”

This is information about the future.

Allaah’s Statement in Surat al-Muzzammil (73:20):

“Verily, your Lord knows that you do stand (to pray at night) a little less than two thirds of the night, or half the night, or a third of the night, and so do a party of those with you. And Allaah measures the night and the day. He knows that you are unable to pray the whole night, so He has turned to you (in Mercy). So, recite you of the Qur’an as much as may be easy for you. He knows that there will be some among you sick, others traveling through the land, seeking of Allaah’s Bounty, yet others fighting in Allaah’s Cause. So recite as much of the Qur’an as may be easy (for you), and offer the prayers perfectly, give Zakat (obligatory charity) and lend to Allaah a goodly loan, and whatever good you send before you for yourselves, (i.e. non-obligatory acts of worship: prayers, charity, fasting, etc.), you will certainly find it with Allaah, better and greater in reward. And seek forgiveness of Allaah. Verily, Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

Allaah (‘Azza wa Jall) knows what was, what will be, and what will not be and how it will be.

Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said in Surat al-Hadid (57:22):

“No calamity befalls on the earth or in yourselves but is inscribed in the Book of Decrees (Al-Lauh-al-Mahfoudh), before We bring it into existence. Verily, that is easy for Allaah.”

Meaning: Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) has written the destiny of all things before He created the creation. ‘No calamity occurs on the earth’, refers to famine, flood, thunderbolts, etc.; ‘or nor in yourselves’ refers to suffering and diseases, ‘but it is inscribed in the Book of Decree’ before it happens.

’Abdullah bin ’Amr bin Al-’Aas (Radia-Allaahu ‘anhu) said, “I heard the Messenger of Allaah (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) say, ‘Allaah ordained the measures of (everything) fifty thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth. And His Throne was over the water.’” [Muslim and Ahmed]

3- This verse (57:22) provides clear evidence to refute the misguidance of the Qadariyyah sect, who deny Allaah’s Pre-ordainment and His knowledge of everything before it occurs. And this statement occurred at the end of the era of the Companions.

Yahya bin Ya’mur said: “The first one who talked about the Qadar was Ma’bad al-Juhani. I and Hamid bin ’Abdur-Rahman were performing Hajj or Umra. We said if we meet any of the Companions of the Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) we would ask him about what those people are saying regarding the Qadar. Allaah guided us to see ’Abdullah bin ’Umar bin al-Khattab (Radia-Allaahu ‘anhu) entering the mosque. We surrounded him (me and my friend), one of us on his right and the other one on his left. I said: “O Abu ’Abdur-Rahman! Group of people has appeared who recite the Qur’an and seek the knowledge, etc. and they claim that there is no Qadar and that any matter that occurs is not pre-ordained nor known by Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) except after its occurrence.” ’Abdullah bin ’Umar bin al-Khattab (Radia-Allaahu ‘anhu) said: “If you meet those people, tell them that I am free from them (i.e. I am dissociated from them) and they from me, and ’Abdullah bin ’Umar swears that if one of them spent in charity as much as Mount Uhud in gold, Allaah will not accept it from him until he believes in al-Qadar.” [Muslim]

These people claim that Allaah ordered His slaves and forbade them without knowing who will obey Him and who will disobey Him, and that He doesn’t know who will enter Paradise and who will enter Hell until the slaves act, and only then Allaah knows that. [Shaikh-ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah in the book “Iman”]

Allaah is far above what these mislead sects allege against Him.

4- The creation can never compass anything of the Creator’s Knowledge, i.e. they do not know anything about His Essence or Attributes except what Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) has disclosed to them through His Messengers and revealed Books.

Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said in Surat al-Baqarah (2:255):

“And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills.”

The creation can never compass anything of the Creator’s Knowledge except what Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) has disclosed to them through His Messengers and revealed Books.

And He (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said in Surat Ta-Ha (20:110):

“He (Allaah) knows what happens to them (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them (in the Hereafter), and they will never compass anything of  His Knowledge.”

5- Generally, the creatures do not know anything except what Allaah (‘Azza wa Jall) teaches them. Every legal (religious) and divinely decreed knowledge is attributed to Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala), Al-‘Aleem Al-’Hakeem, the All-Knowing, the All-Wise; as the angels said in Surat al-Baqarah (2:32):

“They (angels) said: ‘Glory be to You, we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Verily, it is You, the All-Knower, the All-Wise.”

And in Surat al-Baqarah (2:282), Allaah (‘Azza wa Jall) said:

“So be afraid of Allaah; and Allaah is teaching you. And Allaah is the All-Knower of each and everything.”

Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said, addressing His Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), in Surat an-Nisa’ (4:113):

“Allaah has sent down to you the Book (the Qur’an), and Al-Hikmah (Islamic laws, knowledge of legal and illegal things, i.e. the Prophet’s Sunnah-legal ways), and taught you that which you knew not.”

Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said about al-Khidr in Surat al-Kahf (18:65):

“And whom We had taught knowledge from Us.”

There are many verses which indicate that the origin and basic of all knowledge is Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala), whether it is legal (religious) knowledge or worldly knowledge.

6- Our knowledge compared to Allaah’s Knowledge is very little. In spite of the abundant knowledge that the children of Adam have acquired, however, it is still very little compared to Allaah’s broad and vast knowledge.

Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said in Surat al-Isra’ (17:85):

“And they ask you [O Muhammad (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)] concerning the ‘Ruh’ (the spirit); Say: ‘The Ruh (the spirit), its knowledge is with my Lord. And of knowledge, you (mankind) have been given only a little.’”

In the story of Musa (Moses) and al-Khidr (‘Alayhim-us-Salaam), the Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:… When they both embarked on the ship, a sparrow came and stood on the edge of the boat and dipped its beak once or twice in the sea. Al-Khidr said: ‘O Musa (Moses)! My knowledge and your knowledge compared to Allaah’s Knowledge is like the amount of water taken by this sparrow from the sea with its beak.’[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

7- The difference between the knowledge of the Creator and the knowledge of the creation: no deficiency nor forgetfulness or ignorance ever befalls Allaah’s Knowledge.

Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said in Surat Maryam (19:64):

“And your Lord is never forgetful.”

Allaah’s Knowledge encompasses all His creation’s affairs; as He (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said in Surat Ya-Seen (36:79):

“And He is the All-Knower of every creation.”

Never does a knowledge (about something) occupy Him (Subhana wa Ta’ala) from another knowledge; as hearing (something) never occupies Him (‘Azza wa Jall) from hearing (other things). How can the creatures have qualities like that while they are born ignorant and do not know anything, after which they learn little by little.

Never does a knowledge (about something) occupy Him (Subhana wa Ta’ala) from anotherknowledge; as hearing (something) never occupies Him (‘Azza wa Jall) from hearing (other things).

Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said in Surat an-Nahl (16:78):

“And Allaah has brought you out from the wombs of your mothers while you know nothing.”

Their knowledge is preceded by ignorance, while Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) had the knowledge and still He is the All-Knowing; His Knowledge is never preceded by ignorance.

You can see a person who is knowledgeable in Fiqh but has is knowledgeable about grammar, or you find someone who is knowledgeable in both Fiqh and grammar but has no knowledge about mathematics and medicine. In contrast, the knowledge of Allaah is real and perfect:

“Allaah surrounds (comprehends) all things in (His) knowledge.”(At-Talaq 65:12)

“He (Allaah) keeps account of all things (i.e. He knows the exact number of everything).”(Al-Jinn 72:28)

8- Allaah (‘Azza wa Jall) particularizes the knowledge of the unseen to Himself.

He (Subhana wa Ta’ala) said in Surat al-An’aam (6:59):

“And with Him are the keys of the ‘Ghaib’ (all that is hidden), none knows them but He.”

He (Subhana wa Ta’ala) also said in Surat an-Naml (27:65):

“Say: ‘None in the heavens and the earth knows the ‘Ghaib’ (unseen) except Allaah, nor can they perceive when they shall be resurrected.’”

Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) has mentioned five matters of the unseen in Surat Luqman (31:34):

“Verily, Allaah! With Him (Alone) is the knowledge of the Hour, He sends down the rain, and knows that which is in the wombs. No person knows what he will earn tomorrow, and no person knows in what land he will die. Verily, Allaah is All-Knower, All-Aware (of things).”

Al-Aloosi (Rahimahullaah) commented saying: “Mentioning these five matters of the Ghaib does not mean that other than these are known by other than Allaah. And what is mentioned in this verse are just some examples of the most important unseen matters.” [Ruh al-Ma’ani]

Undoubtedly, the knowledge of the ‘Ghaib’ (the unseen) is wider and more vast than to be restricted or limited to these five matters only.

Whoever claims that he knows the ‘Ghaib’ other than Allaah, (in other words, whoever claims that he has knowledge of something that Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) doesn’t know), he has disbelieved in the aforementioned verses.

Aisha (Radia-Allaahu ‘anha) said: “Whoever claims that he [the Prophet (Salla-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)] tells about the future (and what will happen tomorrow), then he has forged a great lie against Allaah (Subhana wa Ta’ala), and Allaah says in Surat an-Naml (27:65):

“Say: ‘None in the heavens and the earth knows the ‘Ghaib’ (unseen) except Allaah.” [Muslim]
