The Gravity of Abandoning Salat

Source: “O Who abandons the Salaat” by Shaikh Husain Ya’qouh.

The Prophet (May Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said, Your Lord, Blessed and Glorified be He, says, ‘O son of Adam, devote yourself to worshiping Me and I shall fill your heart with contentment (richness) and your hands with provision.  O Son of Adam, do not go away from Me, for (if you do), I shall fill your heart with poverty (and neediness) and your hands with occupation.” [Al-Haakim]

If the one who does not pray is asked, why don’t you pray? He may answer with “I am not free or I have no time”

Bear in mind whoever is occupied with the Duniya and his occupation made him abandon the Salaat is like the one whom Allah, the Exalted said in Surat Al-'Alaa (87:17)

Nay, you prefer the life of this world, although the Hereafter is better and more lasting

Allah, the Exalted says in Surat al-Insaan (76:27)

Verily! These (disbelievers) love the present life of this world, and put behind them a heavy Day (that will be hard).

Allah is Ar-Razzaq who brings you the money. He is warning us against being occupied with this worldly affairs and not devoting ourselves to Him. Many claim that working (being busy with worldly jobs) is kind of Ebaadah (worshipping Allah).

Bear in mind that any work or action diverts you from worshipping Allah is an act of worship to the Shaytaan (Devil). This person who is afraid you lose one Dirham or one Dollar if he leaves his work (just for few minutes) to offer the Salaat is slave to the Dirham and Dinar whom the Prophet (May Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) invoked against them saying, “Ruin (perished) be the slave of the Dinar; the slave of the Dirham, and the slave of the striped silk cloak. If he is given anything he is pleased, but if not, he is unhappy.” [Al-Bukhaari]

The slave of Dirham and Dinar means a person who prefers these things to the Divine injunctions and commandments and strives day and night to amass worldly goods. Instead of worshipping Allah, he worships such things and is thus guilty of worship of others besides Allah, a condition which causes his ruin.

If it is permissible for one to leave offering the Salaat for his occupation, then the Mujaahid would be more deserving to this permissibility than any other one. The Mujaahid who is fighting in Allah’s cause the enemy of Allah. If the Mujaahid is commanded to offer the Salaat of Khauf (fear). Even the sick person is not allowed to leave the Salaat. Only the women who are menstruating and in post birth bleeding are exempted from the Salaat.

Once the Prophet (May Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) finished the Morning Prayer, he saw two men who had not prayed with him. He ordered them to be brought and they were trembling with fear. He asked them, “what had prevented you from praying with us?” they said, “We had already prayed at our homes.” He said, “Do not do so, if you pray at your homes and then you come while the Imam has not yet performed the prayer, you must pray with him, and it will be a voluntary prayer for you.” [Reported by Ahmed and authenticated by Al-Albaani]

Another person who does not pray, his excuse is that he finds it difficult to take off his shoes and perform Wudu'. Does not he know that religion is easy, if one performs Wudu’ in the morning when he is going out to  work and puts his shoes on he just have to wipe over them.

Another person may say that the Salaat is heavy upon him, and every time he gets up to offer the Salaat, he feels that there comes between him and the offering of the Salaat. What will make the Salaat easy and light upon you is to know that you are a slave to Allah, and you will never be free unless and until you offer the Salaat.

When you pray and submit yourself then you are the slave of Allah and you are freed from everything else.

Allah, the Exalted says in Surat al-Hashr (59:16)

"(Their allies deceive them) like Satan, when he says to man: ‘Disbelieve in Allah,’ But when (man) disbelieves in Allah Satan says: “I am free of you, I fear Allah, the Lord of Alameen (Mankind, Jinn, and all that exists)!"

When you see that the Salaat is heavy upon you, you should struggle and strive hard, why do you strive hard to sleep and you do not strive hard against yourself in the cause of Allah to offer the Salaat?

Resort to Allah and our Lord is Generous, He, the Exalted says in Hadeeth Qudsi: “Whoever comes closer to Me a distance of one handspan I will come closer to him a distance of one arm, and whoever comes closer by a distance of one arm I will come closer to him a distance of two arms, whoever comes walking to Me I will come closer to him running,” [Al-Bukhaari]

You just take the first step towards the guidance and He, the Exalted will help you. First time would be heavy then the second time it becomes lighter and easier.

A person may say, “All those who offer Salat are bad and thiefs.”

How can one say this and Allah says that the Salaat prevents one from Al-Fahshaa’ and Munkar.

Another person may say, “I don’t pray because as long as my heart is clear, and I don’t harm people and I love my Lord.”

We answer and say, “what proves that your heart is white is to offers the Salaat and the one who does not offer the Salaat his heart is black.”

The Prophet (May Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Between the slave and shirk and Kufr (disbelief) is abandonment of Salaat. It is impossible that the person is Kaafir and his heart is white."

Another person may say: “God Willing, I will pray the beginning of Ramadaan or when I go for Hajj, etc.”

What about if one dies before that day. He may say, “then I will die with good intention.” Bear in mind that good intention will not correct the invalid / corrupted action.

Angel of death will not choose the old and leave the young in what state do you like to die as a Muslim or as a Kaafir? A person may say, “I have a lot of sins, grave sins when I get rid of them then I will pray.”

If you offer the Salaat Allah will guide you to repent. No one is able to repent by his own self unless Allah will guide him to repent.

Another person may say, “Allah is Merciful and Forgiving, you just give ua a respite and be patient with us.” In fact we are afraid that you die upon Kufr. It is foolishness to think that you don’t hear the Command of your Lord and His statement and you ask Him “O Lord be Merciful to me.”

If You listen to Him, Obey His Commands, adopt His Way then say “O Lord send down Your mercy upon us” as "Allah’s mercy is vast.”

A person may say, “I feel that my Lord would not accept my prayer.”

Allah, the Exalted says in Hadeeth Qudsi, “I am just as My slave thinks I am (i.e. I am Able to do for him what he thinks I can do for him.)” {Agreed upon}

Think good about Allah, you offer the Salaah and Allah Our Lord will guide you and help you against your (evil) self and expect good from Allah.

Every cell in your body is from Him, your heart is beating by His Will, you can see, hear, talk by His Will. Everything you own is from Him. Living continuously in this life is by His Will and Ability. All your life is in His Hands. Every day He calls you "Come to Salaat!"

Why don’t you respond to Him and offer the Salaat?

What will you do on the Day of Resurrection when the sun comes closer to the heads of all the creation and you feel thirsty then you see a big tank of the Prophet (May Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), you ran to this tank to drink and you will be driven away from it. He will say to you “May you be deprived from mercy” [As reported in Muslim] and that is because you did not pray.

What will you do at that moment? The records of deeds will be flying and distributed, how would you receive your record?

Then you will be taken to account and the first thing that you will be asked about is your Salaat, if it is reformed then the rest of your deeds will be reformed, and if it is defected then the rest of your deeds will be defective.

One person may say “I pray according to my mood”. Then bear in mind that your Salaat is not accepted, because you are praying for you mood and not for Allah.

As-Salaat is a moral school teaches one the discipline, Salaat teaches one the deliberation (forbearance), tolerance, tranquility.

·        Salaat causes the intellect to grow

·        Salaat trains you to be alert for the timing of the Salaat

·        Salaat teaches you to concentrate on the meaning of the Quran & Khushu

·        Salaat gives one rest in his self and protection from heedlessness.

·        Salaat for need, if you invoked Allah for any need you want, Allah will grant you.

·        Salaat is remedy and healing from worry.

·        Salaat is remedy for discontent

·        Salaat is expiration of Sins

Narrated Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him): I heard Allah’s Messenger (May Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) saying: “Tell me, if there were a stream at the door of one of you in which he takes a bath five times a day, would any filth remain upon his body?” They replied. “No dirt would remain.” He (May Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said “Similar is the case of the five (obligatory) Salaat (the prayers.) Allah obliterates all sins as a result of offering them.” Al Bukhari and Muslim

Abdullah Bin Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he heard the Prophet (May Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) saying. “When the believing salve gets up to offer the Salaat, his sins will be brought and put on his head and shoulders; whenever he bows or prostates his sins are dropped (i.e. expiates).” Al Haithamir

As-Salaat is a protection and preservation. It protects one from committing sins, protects one from the calamities and afflictions, It protects from the punishments of the grave. The person will be in Allah’s guardianship as long as he prays. The Prophet (May Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Whoever offers dawn (fajr) prayers will come under the protection of Allah. O Son of Adam! Beware, lest Allah should call you to account in any respect from (for withdrawing) His protection.” Muslim

Ibn al-Qayyim (May Allah have mercy on him) said: As-Salaat brings the provision, preserves the health, repels the harm, get rid of diseases, strengthens the heart bring light and beauty on the face, pleases the soul, refreshes the body (removes the laziness), energizes the limbs, supplies with strength, opens up the breast, nourishes the soul, enlighten the heart, maintains the blessings, repels the plight, brings the Barakah, keeps the Shaytaan away and brings one close to the most Beneficent (Ar-Rahman).

The Salaat has great impact in keeping the heart and body healthy and drives away the harmful things from them especially of it is performed perfectly. If a man is afflicted with sickness or a calamity his share of these distress will be less if he is offering the Salaat. The Salaat has great effect on repelling the evils of this life. There is nothing like the Salaat in attaining all the good in this life and Hereafter nor in repelling all the evil in this life and Hereafter. [Prophetic Medicine]

Fir’awn (Pharaoh), Hamaan and Ubbay bin Khalafi.” [Bin Baz in his Fatawa and graded it Saheeh, Al-Albaani in Mishkeet al-Masaabih no. 550, Ahmad Shakir also graded it as Saheeh]

Missing only one Salaat is one major sin and if one frequently does that then he is of the people of major sins, unless he repents. If he abandons the Salaat totally then he is one of the losers, untreated criminals.”

Abandonment of Salaat is cause of indulging and drowning in the lust and drowning on the lust is means to be drowned in Jahanam (Hell-fire). In the valley of wayl (woe) and in Saqar.

Allah, the Exalted says in Surat al-Muddathir (74:42)

What has caused you to enter Hell? They will say: “We were not of those who used to offer the Prayers.”

There is concomitance between abandoning the Salaat and being down in lusts:

Allah, the Exalted says in Surat Maryam (19:59)

Then, there has succeeded them a posterity who have given up prayers (i.e. made their prayers to be lost, either by not offering them or by not offering them perfectly or by not offering them in their proper fixed time, etc..) and have followed lusts. So they will be thrown in Hell.

Bear in mind is that the punishment for a sin is to commit another sin after it and whoever made his Salaat to be lost then he will make everything to be lost.

The Prophet (May Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever missed one Salaat as if he has lost his family and property (wealth).” [Sahaah and authenticated by Al-Albaani]

The one who abandons the Salaat laughs and does not feel of the greatness of his sin, does not feel of Allah’s punishment for him with death of heart.

O who abandon the Salaat! Do you know that all the good that you are enjoying of is from our Lord? Does not He deserve that you honor Him, venerate Him? Is there any bestower of favors other than Allah?

Beware of being of the negligent Muslims who abandon the Salaat deliberately, nor be like a Muslim who prays sometimes and abandons the Salaat another time. And beware of being like hypocrites who get up lazily to offer the Salaat. And Our Lord will open up for you your breast, Elevate your rank, enrich you with lawful earning, guide your wife, guide your children and bless them, bless your provision and protect you from your enemy.

The statements of the Salaf concerning the Salaat

Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) said,"There is no share on Islam for whoever abandons the Salaat,” He (May Allah be pleased with him) offered the prayers while his wound was bleeding (from being stabbed)." Sifat as Safwah 2/131

Abdullah Bin Maid (May Allah be pleased with him) said, “Whoever abandons his prayers, he has no religion,”

Shafiq bin Abdullah reported.”The Companions of Allah’s Messenger (May Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) did not consider the abandonment of any action as disbelief (kufr) except neglecting the Salaat (the prayers).” Al Tirmidhi
